It’s been a very long time since I picked up a book that I couldn’t put down. I had enjoyed the Sookie Stackhouse books up until this point but after feeling quite let down by Living Dead In Dallas I was expecting the 3rd installment to be the page turner it is. (more…)

“Three, four, better lock your door”
What a difference a year makes, the first A Nightmare On Elm Street is one of the greatest horror movies ever made (making a shitload of cash) so it was inevitable that a sequel would follow. Freddy’s Revenge was rushed out, bearing little resemblance to its predecessor – but did that mean it wasn’t a good film? Don’t hold your breath, this film is rubbish. (more…)

“One, two, Freddy’s coming for you”
This is classic horror at its best and is one of the reasons that I love the genre more than any other. With the remake bound I thought it was time to add this bad boy to the reviews vault before my opinion gets tainted (although it does seem the new vision is returning Freddy to scary). Writing this also gave me an excuse to watch it again, not that I needed one. (more…)

“Bitches!”
The problem with sequels is that you never know what path they’re going to follow. Some have little to do with the original creating their own story, sharing the name only. Others bring in a new cast and replicate the plot points of the predecessor, same shit different day.
Eli Roth returned to direct part two (why do so many horror franchises feel the need to add the word ‘part’ to their follow ups?) and as I quite enjoyed the first film the bad reviews and new controversy couldn’t deter me, next time I’ll take heed. (more…)

I have learned two things this month. That the back of DVD boxes almost always lie and that if you can only find two stills for a movie then it’s a safe bet it’s pants. Guess how many usable pics I found for this review? Yes, that’s right. Two! It’s almost as if no one actually gives enough of a monkey’s about this film to bother to write about it. (more…)

Maybe this would have been more appropriate at the beginning of the year but with the Oscars looming I decided to look at the genre that is always overlooked. This Top 5’s only lists films that were released in 2009 (even if they were made two years prior) but it doesn’t matter whether it was theatrically released or went straight to DVD. I would love to hear what other people’s favourite flicks of 2009 were as I’m sure there are many I’ve overlooked. (more…)

“I paid a lot of money for you and that makes you my bitch”
Torture Porn. When you hear that don’t you just cringe? This is the movie that brought that phrase into existence. Every review I read for this found it’s scenes of torture horrific, leading to various countries banning the movie outright (Germany for example). As a horror fan when you hear that type of reaction it makes the film more alluring. Rushing out to see this I was waiting for the screen to make my eyes bleed and then found myself somewhat disappointed. (more…)

“don’t anyone say ‘April Fools’ again or I’ll rip them apart!”
Back in the 80’s it was hard to find a slasher flick that wasn’t based on an obscure holiday. Beginning with Halloween and Friday the 13th things became rather dire with titles such as Bad Birthday, Mother’s Day and the ever popular Domino Day (in honour of the annual Channel Five celebration). Thank God that last one’s not true. In 1986 we were treated to April Fools Day and as its name suggests it was an absolute joke. (more…)

Many times have I returned to a retro release to be astonished that a minor character now has huge celebrity status. Sometimes this increases the greatness of the film but more likely than not the actor’s new found celebrity engulfs the character they are playing. This is a list that covers only a small selection and are listed in no particular order. (more…)

The end is nigh and I’ve finally reached the final review for the first season of Scream Queens. I’ve enjoyed my time with the show but it has been an absolute struggle churning out these recaps. After 8 long weeks the winner was crowned but with my prior knowledge of who won the competition was the journey worth it? (more…)
